There are so few and those few are so good, as far as fem dir are concerned.

Sophia was actually the third to be nominated, only the second to win. It is a sad, sad thing.
The first was Lina Wertmuller in 1977, for her 1975 film Seven Beauties, which I've never seen but is supposed to be outstanding.
The first woman to win a directing oscar was Jane Campion in 1994.
Sadder still, Ms. Coppola was actually the first American woman to even be nominated.
