Gaffer/Sound Mixer/PAs Sought

Griot Soul Films, an Oakland-based non-profit film company is looking for a Gaffer, Sound Mixer-Boom Op, and additional PAs for our feature, scheduled to begin shooting January 19th. It's a 21 day shoot on weekends through March. The ability to bring your own equipment is a plus. On-set experience necessary. We've secured the rest of the crew and cast.

Compensation:

Moderator?

I just found this tribe, with great interest, and I just also noticed that it hasn't been active for a year and is currently without a moderator.

It also has a substantial membership. If there's interest and consensus, I'd be happy to moderate. I'm highly interested in women in film, teach film courses and run an annual film series on women filmmakers. I had been hoping to learn more, and to discuss these highly underrepresented and underrated women with like-minded sorts.

Thoughts?

in honor of womens history month I'd like to see one woman per day that contributed to cinema.

I'll start...Alice Guy-Blache (French, 1875-1968), the first _person_ (man or woman) to direct a film narrative.

pretty quiet...movie ref (not for all)

recently viewed, The Art of Action: Martial Arts in the Movies,
a very informative doc about the history of Martial Arts in films.

it seems when the film was first being established as a medium in mainland China, women were the only ones participating as it was considered a lower form. since the main outlet for actors at this point was the Peking Opera (only comprised of men) this created an opportunity for many women to participate in performance.

the footage they have in the doc is pretty amazing. you can see where a lot of the current moves (down to the last swing and jump) come from.

personally, I have a soft spot for martial arts films. along with my father and brother, I discovered Bruce Lee at age 8-9 and have enjoyed the beauty and intensity of the form. both as art, and human expression.

it always amazes me how many places in film history women have not only been peers, but innovators. this, just happens to be another.

what happened?

pre-code (Hayes code of conduct, eg censorship) films saw a lot of powerful women. Mary Pickford wrote, directed, starred in many films. as well as founded (the now defunct) United Artists with ther then husband Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin. the first actor to be credited in a film was a woman (who's name escapes me now), essentially starting the star system.

after the Hayes hammer fell, few women remained in power. women such as Ida Lupino is still regardeed as one of Hollywood's most respected filmmakers.

what happened after the code was enforced? was it the rise of the studio system? did they all go home and start families? did the momentum of the suffragette loose steam?

nina, you planning to teach a class with this info you're collecting? : ) i could totally see it. actually courses like this do exist in film schools, if i had the time, i would google for curriculum for you, but unf i don't right now. i am meeting with one of my old film profs tonight - andy horton (AMAZING WRITER, google and buy all his books, and AMAZING PERSON/mentor/friend), and i'm gonna tell him about your tribe.

don't know if we can talk about her here after reading your mission statement. she is not in your time window, yet she is a pioneer. i love her stuff, not all of it, but love the fluxus years and love her book grapefruit. i loved lennon in college, i love yoko now.
